Birmingham

Birmingham makes things. Most of the websites do not say what.

The firms around Birmingham tend to make, machine, fabricate or service something specific, and the buyer looking for them is specific too. They search for a tolerance, a material, a capacity or a standard. Most sites in this region answer with a paragraph about quality and heritage, which matches nothing anyone types.

What usually goes wrong on a Birmingham site

Capabilities buried in a brochure

The specifications a buyer filters on sit inside a downloadable PDF, which search engines read poorly and visitors open rarely. The same content as pages would be findable.

No numbers anywhere

Tolerances, sizes, materials, lead times, minimum runs. A specifier needs these to shortlist you and will leave to find them somewhere that states them.

A contact form as the only route

Technical buyers often want to check one fact before they talk to anybody. If the only option is a form, they check a competitor instead.

Built once in 2016

A site that has not moved in years is usually slow on a phone, invisible to structured data and carrying consent that never worked. All three are fixable without a redesign.

Not sure which of those it is? Send the web address and the written 15 point check says so in two working days, free.

What the work actually is

The same list wherever I work, aimed at what a specifier needs to see.

The 15 point technical check

Speed, indexing, structured data, redirects, consent and the rest, written out in the order worth fixing rather than as a 90 page export.

Pages for what buyers search

Most sites describe what the company does. Buyers search for the problem they have. Those are different pages and the second kind is usually missing.

A redirect map before anything moves

Written first, tested on the live site after, so a rebuild or a platform move keeps the positions you already earned.

Tracking that waits for consent

Nothing fires before somebody agrees, verified by watching the network rather than trusting the plugin's own claim.

A page per capability

Named for the process and the material, with the numbers on the page rather than in a download, because that is what gets filtered on and indexed.

Specifications in structured data

Stated so search engines can read them, which is how a page qualifies for the results a technical buyer actually sees.

Shopify and WooCommerce moves

Product data rebuilt rather than dumped across, feeds built by hand when the official app cannot, and the domain kept.

Plain monthly notes

What changed, what moved, what did not, and what I am doing next. Written so you can forward it without translating it.

Want the number first? Every price is published, including the ones I would not charge you.

Why specifications belong on the page, not in a PDF

A buyer sourcing a part rarely starts with a company name. They start with a dimension, a material, a process or a standard, and they type it. A page that states those things can be matched to that search. A PDF that contains them usually cannot, because it is slower to read, awkward on a phone, and often not indexed at all.

The fix is unglamorous and it works: take what is already written in the brochure and publish it as pages, one per capability, with the numbers in the text. Nothing new has to be invented. The information exists already. It is simply in the wrong format for the way it gets looked for.

How remote actually works, day to day

I am in Pakistan, three to four hours ahead of the UK and Ireland. Work is usually already done when your day starts, and anything you send in the afternoon has an answer waiting the next morning. There is no office to visit and no software for you to learn.

You get a written note every month saying what changed and what moved. Everything else happens by email or WhatsApp, in your own time. If a job genuinely needed somebody in the room, I would say so before taking it rather than after.

A furniture retailer: three storefronts, three ad accounts and a CRM

A Dutch furniture retailer with three brands and a ten to twelve week order cycle, where the online numbers alone made a busy business look like a failing one until the measurement was fixed.

What I will not do

Said before you ask, because it is usually the deciding part.

Promise a position

Nobody controls Google's results, and anyone who promises a ranking is either guessing or lying. I will tell you what I expect to move and roughly when, in writing, and you can hold me to that instead.

Hold your accounts

Analytics, Search Console and every ad account are registered in your name from day one. If you stop working with me you lose nothing but me.

Bill a percentage of ad spend

A percentage pays me more when you spend more, which is the wrong incentive. Advertising is a flat monthly fee whatever the budget does.

Take the work if it is the wrong spend

If the free check says your problem is not a website problem, the report says so and I tell you what would actually help, even when that is nothing I sell.

Rather just ask? One question by email or WhatsApp is fine.

Fair questions before you get in touch

You are not based here. Does that matter?

It has not so far. Everything runs by email and WhatsApp, the accounts are in your name, and no project I have run depended on being in the room. If what you want is somebody who will come to your office, I am the wrong choice and I would rather say so now.

What does it cost?

The 15 point check is free. A full audit with a 90 day plan is 290 euro and comes off whatever you buy next. Monthly search work starts at 490 euro and a fixed price website rebuild starts at 1,450 euro. Every price is on the pricing page, not behind a form.

How do we start?

Send the web address. The written check comes back within two working days and says what is holding the site back, in the order worth fixing. There is no call, nothing to install, and no obligation after it.

We sell to other businesses, not consumers. Does this still apply?

More so. Business buyers do more research before they make contact, usually alone, and most of it happens on pages you will never see them visit. The site is doing the early selling whether or not it was built to.

Our products are made to order. What would we even publish?

The envelope rather than a catalogue. What you can and cannot make, in what materials, at what sizes, to what tolerances, in what quantities, and how long it takes. That is what a specifier filters on, and it is the part that is almost never written down.

How long before anything moves?

Technical fixes show up in weeks. New capability pages take months to settle, and on a site with few links longer than that. I will say which of the two your site needs before you spend anything.

Send your web address. That is the whole first step.
